Why we adopted a monkey at monkey world

There are some places you visit as a family and simply enjoy. And then there are places that become part of your life.
For us, Monkey World is one of those places.
We’ve been visiting for years and have always had a real affection for the work they do. So when the opportunity came to adopt one of the monkeys there, it felt like a lovely way of supporting somewhere we already cared about.
And now, rather appropriately, our adopted monkey has a little place at Honeysuckle Cottage too.
A little piece of Monkey World at Honeysuckle
If you’ve stayed with us, you may have spotted the photograph of our adopted monkey in the cottage.
It’s one of those little personal touches that makes Honeysuckle feel like our cottage rather than simply a holiday let.
We love the fact that guests discover these little details while they’re here — whether it’s the things we’ve collected, the local places we recommend or, in this case, a rather special resident of Monkey World.
We’re very lucky to have such an amazing attraction practically on our doorstep.
What makes Monkey World so special?
Monkey World – Ape Rescue Centre in Dorset is home to rescued and endangered primates from around the world.
The centre was founded with the aim of providing a safe haven for primates who have suffered as a result of the illegal pet trade, smuggling and other forms of exploitation.
What we particularly love is that a visit isn’t simply about seeing the animals. It’s also about understanding why they are there and learning about the work involved in giving them a safe and appropriate home.
There’s something quite humbling about watching the monkeys and apes going about their lives, knowing the stories that brought some of them there.
And, of course, there are plenty of characters!
A lovely day out from West Lulworth
One of the things we love about staying in West Lulworth is how much there is to do without having to spend your entire holiday sitting in the car.
You can spend a morning walking around Lulworth Cove, explore the Jurassic Coast, stop for lunch in the village and then head to Monkey World for the afternoon.
Or make Monkey World the focus of a day and take your time exploring the centre before heading back to Honeysuckle Cottage for a quiet evening.
After a day of walking, exploring and meeting the monkeys, there’s something rather nice about coming back to a cosy thatched cottage, putting the kettle on and relaxing.
