Waking up at Honeysuckle Cottage is a bit like stepping into a storybook. After a slow morning enjoying coffee in the garden and looking out over the rooftops of West Lulworth, it’s time to trade the cozy charm of our 300-year-old thatched retreat for a bit of grand history.

Heading just a few miles up the road to the magnificent Lulworth Castle and Grounds its a relaxing day trip.

Morning: Exploring the Castle & Climbing the Tower

Built in the early 17th century as a hunting lodge to entertain royalty, Lulworth Castle has a dramatic history—including a devastating fire in 1929 that left it a roofless shell. Today, it has been beautifully restored by English Heritage and the Weld Estate, allowing you to walk inside its massive stone walls.

Step Inside: Explore the basement rooms and walk through the vast, open-air gut of the castle. It feels part medieval fortress, part modern architectural marvel.
Climb the Tower: Make sure to head up the spiral stone staircase to the top of the tower. The panoramic views over the Dorset countryside and the Purbeck hills are absolutely breathtaking.

Lunch: A Rustic Pub Feast

By early afternoon, you’ll have worked up an appetite. Just a short stroll or a 2-minute drive from the castle gates sits The Weld Arms. This traditional, thatched 17th-century country pub is the ultimate spot for a hearty, rustic lunch. It features incredible local Dorset ales, fantastic pub classics, and a lovely beer garden if the sun is shining. It does a cracking Sunday roast, so we always recommend this to our guests!

Afternoon: Woodland Strolls & The Chapel

After lunch, head back into the park grounds to wander the extensive lawns and tranquil woodland walks.

Don't miss the St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Chapel, tucked away in the grounds. Built in the late 18th century, it looks like a grand classical temple from the outside and features a spectacular, elegant interior. It's a beautifully peaceful spot to wrap up the sightseeing portion of your day.

Pro Tip: Keep an eye out for the resident peacocks! There’s a feed dispenser on the grounds, so remember to bring a few 20p coins if you want to feed them during your walk.Evening: Cozying Up Back at Honeysuckle Cottage

A Quiet Evening in the Cottage

After a full day of exploring towers and walking the estate grounds, there is nothing quite like coming "home" to Honeysuckle Cottage.

Head back to West Lulworth, park the car, and spend your evening relaxing. Wrap yourself in a blanket on the raised patio, pour a glass of wine, and watch the stars come out over the village.
